I was trying to find a general thread for people to post their creative photography in, but oddly one hasn't been done before...There have been a few separate threads from users wanting to show off their individual stuff, but nothing for all users in general...

So here's a thread; Now show off your creative photography here... grin2.gif (And I say creative, since anyone can take a picture and post it in the "Random images..." thread in Community, but I wanna see some more interesting things for this thread wink2.gif )

This is my uncle Charlie's Siamese/Tabby cat...It was sitting on top of this chair in the living room, but I hadn't noticed it was there at first because the color of it's fur looks similar to the color of the chair...Something about the way the afternoon light from the window lighting up half of it's face in contrast from the darkness that the living room could achieve with the lights off seemed perfect for a picture... happy.gif

My cats aren't sensitive to movements. They usually sleep beside me so they don't really mind me getting close to them. They are actually aware that I am taking their pictures even with a flash on laugh2.gif I try not to use flash when photographing them if they're awake because they don't like it so I steal photos during daytime when there's enough light.

@zerocool_designs

Very nice photos! I tried making photos like that during my photography class but I failed so I took photos of animals and plants instead (yeah and my final grade were merely passing pinch2.gif ) I'm bad with manual cameras sweatingbullets.gif

Some pictures of lorikeet I took while at the Louisville Zoo yesterday...

These birds are very pretty, since they're very colorful...These particular birds at the exhibit were trained to land on people's heads and everything...I didn't have any land on me (One did land on my dad's head, but my stupid camera took too long to turn on before it flew away), but they did enjoy the human company, especially for those with nectar...

user posted image

This bird kept getting onto the walkway, which isn't good for the lorikeets, since they might accidentally get stepped on...

user posted image

There was a forth bird in this "group", but he was far off to the side and didn't join in with the others...Moments after I had taken this picture, the four of them got into a bird fight...

a bit of color correction but other than that its just a polarizer and the lighting on the cars front and side is probably misc lights from the building so its just by chance.

Since this is a photography thread, might as well go into some details about the image. The image above is taken with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens wide open. It is cropped at 25% of the original raw image. Below is a 100% of a portion of the raw image.

user posted image

As you can see, the deteriorating image quality can be seen clearly when the picture is viewed at 100%. But for a $60 lens, this is probably the best bang-for-the-buck lens from Canon. Another noticeable aspect is how this lens handled CA. As you can see below, CA is handled quite poorly in the background (or foreground) blur regions when wide open. Stopping down would not help much in this situation, it'll actually makes it even more noticeable. But when compare to other lens in its class, CA is well controlled relatively speaking. All in all, this lens is worth every pennies. If have a SLR camera compatible with Canon's EF lens, be sure to check this lens out.

I'm currently taking a photography class at school, so if you guys could comment on what you like and what you don't like about/in the pictures it would really help me. You can be brutally honest if you want to.

Posted by: Alex Sep 12 2007, 06:48 PM
The ceiling shot is neat. You took of picture of nothing special but the way you looked at it made it look somewhat interesting. The light shining through the windows and onto the wall is cool. One thing that bothers me, which is something you couldn't do anything about, is the focal point. It's like where the walls & ceiling intersect wants to be the focal point because the lines all pull you towards it, but the top edge of the light shining in draws you to another point and almost fights for attention with the brightness and direction.

Posted by: BOZZ Savage Sep 12 2007, 07:22 PM
Yeah, I actually made the mistake of forgetting to turn it vertical. It's actually a corner, but the whole focal point issue still is apparent. If I did take another angle I could have minimized the light on the wall, but I kind of like that. If you look at it the way it's supposed to be, the lines all meet up generally where the gridlines meet. (Draw a tic-tac-toe grid on it, and you'll see what I mean) So it draws your attention a bit more away from the light on the wall.

Either way thanks for commenting on the picture. You got any other comments? I'd sure love to hear them, good or bad. smile.gif

Actually have the dog lower. Raise the camera and get rid of the excessive space under the dog. Too much of the floor showing. 3/5 of the picture is just floor. Should be 2/5 max.

Posted by: BOZZ Savage Sep 14 2007, 10:42 PM
I was using the rule of 1/3s, I meant to have the floor taking up around 2/3s of the picture. Although after seeing what you mean, it would have looked even better is Shadow was at the bottom 1/3 of the picture and the wall was the rest of the 2/3s.

Maybe if you had feathered the selection of the focus flowers, you'd get a better look. There's something awkward about the way you have it right now. Almost like the lines are too hard around them. Taking off the border was definitely a step in the right direction.

That's because of the gradient map. It makes the lines darker, but without the gradient map you can't see the details of the flower. :/

Here's some more that I took today. smile.gif

Rayn, how do you get your colors the way you do in the Levin shot? I've seen it in your photos before and I love it! Is it a filter on the camera itself, or is it something in Photoshop? If, it's in Photoshop what do you do?

Also do you have any more pictures of the Levin? I love that car! fear2.gif

color is done thru gradient adjustment layers and playing around with the blending modes and masking out the colors i dont like.

on my more recent shots in the woods thread a lot of the desaturation is actually how i had my camera setup so its in camera and not photoshop there.

also had a polarizer on for most of these shots cept night shots.

dont wanna clog up the thread so im just using links for the other old versions of the levin shots.

Based on my opinion :

Version 1 : Haunted house - Suitable for Fatal Frame / horror movies
Version 2 : A house full with nostalgia - Happiness / Sweet memories

My vote goes to Ver.2 . Anyway, good job for doing this.

Ian

It's possible you may want to go with a theme for the pieces you're submitting. Possibly use the season, autumn, as your theme? If you were to choose this, Ver2 would be good because of the colors. However, the horse chestnut tree picture you have is great and really shows how cold the season is, in which case Ver1 may be better. Autumn is a cold season with warm colors.

Not sure if this qualifies as good or not but these were pictures taken with a pinhole camera. It's been our current project in photography class for the past month or so. If you don't know what a pinhole camera is, here's a Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera.

These are just my two favorites out of like 8 we had to do. The bottom row are negatives and the top row are positives made through contact printing.

The one on the right had some unusual light leak on the bottom (technically top of my camera) corners. It's the only pictures with those streaks.

Ian

The first picture's background is too distractive. Try dropping 1 or 2 stop, so the background can blend in more smoothly. 28-80mm is capable to open up to f/3.5, you should stick with that aperture on the wide end if you want to make the subject stand out better. Second picture is very nicely taken, love the background blur.

Yeah, I can't wait either. I think I'm pretty much set on a Pentax K100D, I went to a camera store with my dad and I held the Canon XT/XTi, the Nikon D40, and the Pentax K10D/K100D. I asked the guy what he would recommend to me and he said the Pentax K100D. After holding after a while, I liked it a lot, and they have a bundle thing where you get the body the 18-55mm 70-300mm and a gadget bag for $700. I've been saving up for a while, but Christmas took a chunk out of that so now I'm down to around $100 saved up. I'm gonna save all the Christmas/Birthday money I get towards the camera along with the money that I hopefully get from the summer job I hopefully get this summer. tongue.gif

Did I tell you guys how my photo teacher is like "apprenticing" me? biggrin.gif She put me down on this list that she and her husband take and train personally, with their cameras and lighting equipment and stuff. Haha, what makes you ask? I've never had any instruction of any kind for photography, I just figure some things out on my own and proceed to talk like I know what I'm talking about. However, I am in a class for film and broadcasting and my group is definitely on the teacher's good side and he's mentioned to us his need for some students to help film the Battle of the Bands and I think that'll be fun. I'm not too sure about this, but the H3 should have a mode called "Twilight", which is perfect for those kind of shots i took. The downside is that it opens the shutter for 2 seconds to let in enuff light to see anything, so a tripod is definitely needed for decent night photography...

Well I did say in my earlier post that I did add a bit of extra blurring to that image in photoshop, but yeah it was taken at probably 18mm at f/3.5 so there was a reasonable amount of blur to start with before it went into photoshop. smile.gif

My road to photography was a rather wierd one.

I started work at a Sony Style on the weekends to earn a little bit of spare cash on the side. When i started work, i had no bloody idea was aperture was, what on earth was ISO and what does shutter speed do. And since they don't provide training to part-time staff, i had to learn everything on my own (Internet research, playing around with the demo Cybershots and Alpha DSLRs etc.). Then i realised that it was fun, very fun indeed.

And so i bought my first camera in years, a Sony DSC-H7 from my workplace. Been having lots of fun since...

I tried, but the orange lighting from the street lamps was so overpowering in their tone that even manually setting the white balance to a white object didnt help much. In the end i decided to leave it as their natural color, giving it the effect u see here...

I was roughly two miles away from the point directly below the jet. But if you want to know the exact distance between the jet and I, it would involve some simple trigonometry. An educated guess would be around 2.2 to 2.3 miles.

I was using the EF 70-200mm f/4L at its longest focal length, plus the fact that the 30D body is a 1.6x crop factor, i was actually getting 320mm if it's on a standard size sensor.

Here's another one I took during the same session. Although, this one is actually a HDR with three photos superimposed together.

The last photo was awesome, InitialN00b. Totally freeze the moment right there. Focus is spotted on. The only thing it would make it better is probably a better background blur. But that's probably limited by the lens you used, since it requires a bigger aperture.

If my guess is correct, we have the same telephoto zoom lens. smile.gif 70-200 f4L, right ? Not sure if yours is a IS or not, mine isn't. Too expensive to afford the IS at the moment.

I love the first three photos, especially the first one. I actually like the way the sun is not behind the petal. It shows that your camera has really high dynamic range. A little tweak in the saturation and contrast would make these 10/10. I prefer more vibrant colors and a tad higher contrast to give it the quality touch.

Posted by: BOZZ Savage Mar 26 2008, 10:52 PM
Well, Perry you just asked me to convert them to JPEGs... Lol, so when I process it later I'll give it to you again. I have my camera set like that, so it doesn't over saturate anything. biggrin.gif

Yup, I think that last one was my favourite as well. Had the whole sequence of it taking off and that's the best shot of the batch.

70-200 f4 non IS is correct smile.gif As a matter of fact, your camera's the same as mine as well (30D ) I just started this photography business a while back and it's affordable enough for now. I had it on aperture priority, so the blur wasn't going to happen tongue.gif Thank god it's a bird, so everyone knows it's in motion when the wings are flapping about like that lol.

am3, tell me how you made the depth of field focus in the middle, and blur out the top and bottom?

Open wide ?

It's easy to get shallow DOF with any lens that can open wide, preferably wider than f2.8. Canon used to make this http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=153&sort=7&cat=all&page=6 that can open at f1.0, that thing got discontinued though. It costs several thousand dollars even to this days to buy a used one. The DOF on that lens is so unforgivable that if you breathe a little too hard when pressing the shutter and your subject will be totally out of focus.

Posted by: am3pkcet Apr 16 2008, 11:21 AM
im using this lens:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511

shot was taken at f/5.6 with a 1/10 sec exposure, 400 ISO, and zoomed to 30mm.

It really comes down to both photos are impeccable and either one will do. It's that hard (for me personally) to choose between the two since the differences are so subtle other than the color in the chips.

Maybe it's also my non-experience in the field of photography. Or just my love for Texas hold 'em.

Posted by: am3pkcet Apr 16 2008, 02:19 PM
the shot was inspired by a friend of mine who actually played a hand just like that (though it was diamonds instead of hearts). it was online and not for money, but he had the royal and the guy he beat had the lower straight flush. off to the side, you see the 2/7 of hearts and out of frame i have two queens and a K/9 offsuit, but i couldnt fit all in frame and have it look good. its even more dramatic than Casino Royale's crazy hand. haha.

the third picture was interesting and difficult to work on. the other two were pretty straight forward in the editing phase, but seeing as the original of the 3rd looked like this:

i had some difficulty getting that to look like the blue hue of tv screen light.

also, there'ssome graininess and brightness issues with the on-screen versions of these pics; they look much better printed. they were printed on 8 1/2" x 11" Illford Galerie Premium Gloss paper and trimmed to proportion.

Those are pretty nice. What lens did you use for these ? I especially like the first one for its perspective and feel.

Posted by: am3pkcet May 16 2008, 11:36 AM
Used my XTi with the 17-85mm lens for all three. Each were shot with as low an fstop as the zoom would allow. Top and bottom were each shot at 400 ISO, middle at 800.

edit: also, the top pic is a rework of the original edit too. i edited that one first, but after seeing the need for a blue-tint theme, i had to re-edit it a bit. here's the original edited ver (note that there's also less highlight in the face; that was something i added to the later, blue one):

Wow, those are some pretty creative angles with the cat pictures! I also like the processing of the first cat picture. That's my personal favorite style of processing. biggrin.gif

Yea I really like the way that came out as well. Too bad it's a little blurry.

I thought that was a lefty Mustang bass at first but the pick guard is different and so is the bridge. So, the question is, what IS that bass?

Ohh, is it a Jazz Bass?

Posted by: Horiyoshi May 19 2008, 08:21 PM
Yea lefty standard Jazz. I'm in the process of a couple moves so it hasn't been played much at all sad.gif

The vignetting effect is added through Photoshop CS2. It is not an optical defect on the lens.

I love that effect! How do you achieve that effect is PS?

First, make a new layer on top of the image. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw a oval or a circle. Now right click on the selection and Select Inverse. Fill the selection with pure black. De-select the selection. Apply Gaussian Blur to the layer. Now just play with the Fill or Opacity for the layer and there you have the quick n' dirty vignetting effect.

Just something I came up with. There should be better vignetting filter out there for Photoshop. smile.gif

Wow, I thought it would be a tiny bit more complicated than that. I'll put that to good use next time it feel the urge for some floral photography. biggrin.gif

oh... that can work. i usually do it using the paintbush tool. make the brush size super huge, set opacity to about 50%, lightly paint the corners, top and bottom, and then mess with layer opacity (maybe layer blending styles too) to get some nice effects.

And this was taken in my girlfriend's http://shop.lomography.com/fisheye/ camera. Yes it looks cheap. It's 35mm and we haven't gotten used to taking good pictures with it.

That's a cool picture, but the colors sort of seem to fade into one overall khaki color in my eyes. :/ Unless if you were going for that effect, then great job. biggrin.gif

yeah, here it is:

edit: though... it doesnt look nearly as saturated here... it looks much more so in PS. could be the converting to jpg...

see: http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/5715/irregularid6.jpg

ahh.. its the same reason why my other pics look off too; i'm using Adobe 1998 RGB color standards for previewing and working in, but when i save the jpg, it outputs at like standard windows RGB. in the print studio, we use A1998 for all our printings, so everything is calibrated properly, but to save an image to view on a computer screen (IE not printing) i would need to use different settings..... something for me to look into more.

Whoa first off r3d$unz I'm extremely jealous! That's beautiful work! However thing that really distracts from the pictures are the HUGE reflections in the models glasses, take those out somehow whether it be Photoshop or physically those pictures will look even better! Especially the first one with no reflections.

Also, MD what do you mean by edited? A lot of pictures in here have been edited in Photoshop?

Here's some of my own that I posted before, but instead of processing with my crappy "Stock Pentax RAW Processor", these were processed with Adobe Lightroom 1.4 and the results are fantastic!

Conclusion. Lightroom ROCKS. tongue.gif
