Yeah nah bruv, even the original motor wasn't stock. It was no Group A, but it wasn't bone-stock either. I recall Bunta having made adjustments to make the car more 'driveable', which is to say not raw power but just driveability in general. Power band adjustments, stuff like that. Sure, you're still comparing an '83 shitbox to more modern turbo cars with electronic wizardry on board, but I still can't help but poke at false statements.

Shockingly, I was actually painting a broad brush with that. I know maybe 150HP was squeezed out of the stock engine, and yes, the suspension is very well tuned and only got better as the original 4A-GE approached the end of its life, but really all it was was a bucket compared to every other car it raced up until Wataru, where the two cars racing were equally shitty awesome w00t2.gif

IDW probably had something to do with it, in a way. We do not throttle downloads hete, so illegal copies float around freely with no money going to Funimation.

Downloads and bootleg copies is probably the reason why Initial D didn't sell well in the US, I checked Amazon of First to Fourth Stage, it has the S.A.V.E. label. Looking at the other topic in the Merchandise section that shows that someone is selling bootlegs on eBay, the covers on the cases shows its obviously a bootleg because they photoshop the cover with artwork from New ID with logo from Second Stage. So bootlegs and downloads can be the reason why it didn't sell well in the US.

I don't see how Initial D "flopped" seeing as there is still a huge fanbase and demand for it (it was picked as the most wanted series to come back in a Japanese survey).

Did this survey happen before or after 5th Stage? Do Japanese fans still want more Initial D today?

It happened after the end of the anime and manga storyline (after Final Stage). It was mentioned on here too. And according to those results, they sure do.
