Your referring to the subtitle error. What he said was sugei(however it is spelt in romanji) which means "incredible" in japanese.

The engine is a 4AGE 20v, however it was modified for racing. The real engine is used in Toyota's Formula Atlantic series.

There was a real 4AGE 20v with 160-170hp from the factory, however. Just as was said in the anime, the engine was used in the AE101 and AE111. There are two versions, the silvertop(like Takumi's) and the blacktop. Some people have done the 20v conversion to their AE86, although it takes some cutting into the firewall and other modifications.

Check out Club 4AG.com to learn more. A bunch of AE86 guys are there, too. If you post there, don't say "Hey, I saw Takumi's new engine in Initial D. What is it?" A lot of n00bs go on that board asking about that, and the old hands are kind of tired of topics about Initial D. Heck, I'm an Initial D fan, and I get tired of seeing them there.lol

so this 4ag 20v is actually a inline 4 with 5 valves each cylinder? how does that work?

still, thats neat though. Is it possible to swap this rare engine into something other than an ae86..?

2 valves for entry, 3 for exit ...faster exit=faster entry

yes ...you can swap anything you want in anything you want ...but somethings that might be complicated : gearbox, drivetrain(this would require MAJOR modifications if it didn't have the same drivetrain, and the displacement...but like GoFastLookSlow said...everything is possible if your have ressources !

The MR2, AW11, has a 16v 4-AGE in there as well. Many people also swap the 20v engine into these cars. Maybe one day I'll do it myself.

But please, don't expect Takumi's AE86 like results from just a mod... remember it's his driving that makes him win, not his engine.

Oh, and just in case it wasn't clear: Takumi's engine is a full-race version of the factory 20v engine. The standard 20v makes 160-170hp depending on what version, while Takumi's(similar to Formula Atlantic) makes 240hp. Big difference.

sorry I know almost nill about cars, but if I read right the 4ag 20v has 20 valves. Heres a link to a pic of a rally spec Lancer Evolution IV engine with what it looks like 10 valves, explantions or corrections. Thanks

That's a cutaway view, so you can't see all of the valves anyway. The Lan Evo's 4G63 engine has 16 valves.

The standard 4AGE and supercharged 4AGZE have 16 valves.
The 4AGE 20v has 20 valves.

I was under the impression that the 4AGE 20V infact *IS* the TRD Formula Atlantic motor? The specs cited for the TRD motor is 240HP @ 11,000 RPMs and isn't that the same spec output stated for Takumi's motor? That's what I always thought anyways... although I could be wrong.

In 3rd Stage, Ryosuke says that Takumi's engine was from an AE101 Corolla in a class called "Touring A." I have never heard of this racing series, but the specs do appear similar to the Formula Atlantic engines.

its common to have 2 intakes and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder, am i correct? but as i was getting watching some car getting fixed at a garage, i wandered around and saw that this one car had 1 intake valve, 2 exhausts and a part for the spark plug per cylinder. wtf? dry.gif

Might have been a Mercedes engine. Most of theirs have 3 valves now.

Or...

With the spark plug, maybe it was a direct ignition engine. Direct ignition, IIRC, uses a spart plug that is actually placed in the cylinder, rather than just at the top.

i suppose bunta modified it a bit ...because i don't think 30-40 more hp would had been enough to rematch Kyouchi's 350hp evo

Well it almost wasn't. You have to look at the big picture, though. Takumi kept up with Kyouchi was quite a while on Akagi with just his 150hp(or less) engine. Ryousuke explained that combined with his skill, the extra power(around 100hp more) from the 20v engine would greatly increase his speed.

That increased speed was enough to hold off Kyouchi on Irohazaka(sp?).
